Tommy And David
As David arrived at the prison facility, his nervousness increased. He’d driven over a thousand miles to Florida to start his life over and his new life was about to begin. He was picking up Tommy. Tommy, a person he’d never met face to face before, was being released today. They only knew each other through their letter writing and pictures. David had been contacted a few years back via a gay web site, asking him if he’d like to take on a gay prisoner as a penpal. His first response was a resounding “no” but, after giving it some thought, he relented and chose Tommy after going through all the prospects that the web site had emailed him. And now he found himself pulling into the parking lot of the Holmes Correctional Institution(in Bonifay, Florida) to wait for the man (that he was going to start living with) to walk through those huge, heavily guarded, gates. As he pulled into a parking spot, he thought about how funny life could be. A few years ago if someone had told him he’d fall in love with a prison penpal, he would laughed until it hurt! But, it had happened just the same. Not only to him, but to Tommy as well. They’d talked about it in their letters to each other. They’d planned their lives together through those letters. At 5’08”, 173lbs, Tommy was a perfect match for David’s 5’04”, 150lbs. At least they thought so. They had dismissed their differences (Tommy being white and David being black) and accepted each other for what they were.
David, in particular, was really nervous because he was also HIV. But, Tommy assured him he loved him just the same and promised to devour him their first night together. A prospect that David was definitely looking forward to. He faced the truck so that he could keep an eye on the front gates and sat back nervously. It would be any minute now and he would be able to hug his man for the first time. He checked himself in the rear view mirror one last time. Vanity, he thought to himself. Tommy thought he was cute. David thought Tommy was gorgeous! Sky blue eyes, chiseled chin, and muscles. A ruggedly handsome man. Ok David, he thought to himself, breathe! David had decided to bring with him only his clothes. Everything else they needed for their new apartment, they would pick out and buy together. Suddenly, the heavy gates swung open and there stood Tommy. He was dressed in civilian clothes and he had a white bag slung over his shoulder. The guard handed him a manila envelope, shook his hand, stepped back and pulled the gates shut. Tommy stood there alone, looking around the parking lot anxiously. He had not spotted him, so David opened the car door and stepped out. He cleared his throat and called over to him.
“Tommy?” He called nervously. Tommy turned his way and they stood across the parking lot staring at each other. Slowly, they started walking toward each other and (as if on cue), they each broke out into a broad smile. When they met in the middle of the deserted . . . . .
